Thardeep Rural Development Programme

Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) is a not-for-profit integrated rural development programme. TRDP works with poor and vulnerable segments of society particularly women in the most deprived and remote areas of Sindh Province.
Social mobilization is the foundation of TRDP program. With participation of community institutions, TRDP implements activities under five major themes: 1) sustainable livelihoods, enterprise development and poverty graduation, 2) elementary education with focus on girl’s education, 3) mother and child health, 4) food security and nutrition improvement and 5) disaster preparedness, management, and water & sanitation.

TRDP is working in 14 districts of Sindh which are Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Matiari, Dadu, Jamshoro, Badin, Sanghar, Thatta, Shaheed Benazir Abad, Khairpur and Jacobabad.

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:  In many schools across Thar, children sit on the floor due to  lack of furniture. Each morning, they journey from distant villages, carrying heavy bags on their backs filled not only with books but also with roti and water. Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) recently provided student chairs to two schools near Nagarparkar: the Government Primary School in Lakhe jo Wadhio, Piprio, and the Government School in the historic village of Bhodesar. Having furniture in their schools was a happy moment for the hundreds of students and their teachers.

Bhemo, from the Government School, Lakhe jo Wadhio, Piprio, said, "We have 300 children in our school, and due to the shortage of furniture, they had been studying on the ground. We are deeply grateful to Thardeep for providing these student chairs. Now, the children can sit comfortably and focus on their education. Our children will always pray for you."

Kirsho, a villager from Piprio, expressed similar sentiments, saying, "We are thankful to Thardeep. Our 300 children used to study sitting on the floor, but now, with the student chairs provided by Thardeep, we are filled with gratitude for this kind gesture."

Dileep Kumar, the headmaster of the school in Bhodesar, added, "I am immensely grateful to TRDP for arranging furniture for our children, who had previously been studying on the ground. This support has made a world of difference to their learning experience."

"We did not have water facility in our school and it was cause of trouble for us. Thardeep conducted a survey and then provided us a hand pump. Our bathroom was damaged and it was causing trouble to us. They repaired our bathroom along with providing us a hand pump. Both boys and girls study in this school, and girls were facing a lot of trouble due to the bathroom not being in a proper condition. They pulled us a water line from 1200 feet away. They provided hygiene kits, such as for washing hands they provided soaps. Due to this,mashallah the enrollment of boys and girls at our school is increased, and children also come to school happily. 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀
P'apo is the General Secretary of the village organization 'Aneeta,' which works in village Haji Ibrahim Mari in Mirpurkhas district. The community in the village is poor and unable to construct toilets. Waterborne diseases broke out after the 2022 flood due to open defecation and unsafe drinking water.

Ms. Jheema, who is also from the same village, is a member of the village organization. After the flood, Mr. P'apo, Ms. Jheema, and other members of the 'Aneeta' village organization resolved to work on preventing diseases by raising awareness among villagers about health and hygiene, and by making their village free from open defecation.

"TRDP and Concern Worldwide came to support us. They conducted a survey," says Jheema, "gathered the community, facilitated the formation of the village organization, and provided hand pumps for drinking water." The Thardeep team conducted training sessions on water, sanitation, health, and hygiene (WASH), and disease prevention. Ms. Jheema says that Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) also helped the community construct toilets.

With access to water and toilets, the village is now free from open defecation, and diseases no longer break out. Women no longer have to travel kilometers from their homes to fetch water. Ms. Jheema says, "We are thankful to TRDP. This is a blessing for us." (Mirpurkhas, September 25, 2024)

When the canal’s embankments broke during the 2022 flood, water rushed into the house of Ms. Rehmat in Nayabad village, district Sanghar, Sindh. The crops around her village were washed away, and diseases broke out due to drinking contaminated floodwater. Rehmat says that water was scarce, forcing them to travel three kilometers to fetch it. She recalls, "During this period, no one came to help us except Thardeep Rural Development Programme. They gathered the people in our neighborhood and informed us that they were bringing a health and hygiene program." Rehmat further mentions that #TRDP supported thirteen households in the village by helping them construct washrooms and providing water pumps. "Thank God, the water facility is now near our home," says Rehmat. "Now we can easily fetch water at any time. We are thankful to Thardeep and Concern for helping us during our difficult time." 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀:  

Three years ago, a team from Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) conducted a poverty survey in Shiv Nagar village, in the district Umerkot, Sindh. The survey identified 20 households living below the poverty line, and Gomi's household was one of them. Under the National Poverty Graduation Program (NPGP), Thardeep provided grants to all 20 households to help them start small businesses. Fifteen families received grants to purchase buffaloes, while the remaining five were given the grant to set up small shops or purchase rickshaws. Similar grants were also distributed to poor households in other union councils (UCs) to help them launch small enterprises.

“With this support,” Gomi says in following message, “we combined four villages and formed a group of similar businesses. The group is called ‘Sangeet.’ The households that received buffaloes from Thardeep now collect and sell buffalo milk through the Sangeet group in the market. I became the president of the group"The group holds meetings every three months. During one of these meetings, the members decided that a bike rider from the village would collect milk from the four villages and sell it in the market.

The bike rider buys the milk for 130 rupees per kilogram and sells it for 150 rupees per kilogram. Gomi says, "Initially, we were selling milk for 80 to 100 rupees per kilogram, but now we sell it for 130 rupees per kilogram, allowing us to save a good profit. Thanks to this initiative, we are earning an additional 50 to 70 rupees per kilogram. I am grateful to Thardeep, the Government of Pakistan, NPGP, the Ministry of PASS, and IFAD for their support in helping us start and grow our businesses."
